The kids aren’t alright

Teachers see a lot of things when it comes to kids and their development… And yesterday, BeyondBlue released a survey of 2,369 teachers who reckon the biggest issues facing Aussie kids are poor mental health and too many devices. Asked to name the top 3 health issues for young people, 84% of the teachers picked “depression, anxiety and other mental health issues”, and 57% also nominated “excessive screen time”. Bullying, family violence, internet safety, and not enough physical activity were the other issues at the top of the list. Almost all teachers in the survey also said that high staff turnover was bad for both teachers and students – that’s notable because high rates of teacher burnout are a concern. The survey comes as the Australian Curriculum and Assessment Reporting Authority released resources to help students talk about mental wellbeing in humanities subjects and English as part of a plan to get students back on track after the pandemic.
