Forcing trolls out of the shadows

Another topic PM Morrison picked up on yesterday was misinformation online as he took aim at the social media giants for providing a “coward’s palace” for anonymous trolls to abuse people online. “People should be responsible for what they say in a country that believes in free speech,” he said while flagging new moves against the tech industry to force people to identify who they are. That comes hot on the heels of last month’s High Court decision that media outlets are legally responsible for social media users’ comments on their Facebook pages. Right behind the PM is his deputy Barnaby Joyce – he called for a major crackdown after unsavoury rumours about one of his daughters were aired on social media. Facebook says it has taken steps to “support users managing conversations” while Twitter said anonymity isn’t a way users can breach its rules against abuse.
