Nats bat back, then it’s more chat
If the Coalition’s climate policy is a tennis ball, it’s been hit back into the court of PM Scott Morrison. The Nationals met late yesterday to finalise their proposal for a regional economic package. In return, the Nationals will back reducing greenhouse gas emissions over the coming 30 years via a target of net zero emissions by 2050. Next steps: Morrison will consider that the Nats want over the course of today and the weekend, go back to them with his response, and Nats MPs and senators will meet again on Sunday afternoon. The policy has been at the heart of angst within the Coalition since John Howard lost government in 2007, and it has been a significant factor in the demise of 5 prime ministers since 2010.
