Tidying up the house

The Morrison Government has accepted all 10 recommendations from a review launched after former Liberal staffer Brittany Higgins spoke out earlier this year about an alleged rape by a colleague. Which review? It’s a fair question… We’re talking about the one into how workplace complaints are handled at Parliament House that was undertaken by the PM’s Department. The government’s response means sexual harassment and bullying training will be mandatory for Coalition ministers and staffers. They are singled out because they’re the only group the PM can require to do anything due to the way minister are appointed and their staff employed. A public register will record which MPs and senators do the training off their own bat. And an independent complaints body will be established in the next 6 weeks. Higgins yesterday said she believes the steps will “ensure Parliament House is a safer workplace for all future employees.”
