Another twist for the Murugappans
That’s because the High Court yesterday rejected the bid for 4yo Tharnicaa’s appeal for a protection visa to be heard. Let’s back it up a bit… Sri Lankan couple Nades and Priya applied for refugee visas but were knocked back. Their daughters have also been unable to get visas to live here permanently despite being born in Oz. Until recently, the family was detained on Christmas Island, but a recent outpouring of support saw them shifted to Perth to live in community detention while legal wrangling continues. Tharnicaa is at the centre of that battle, with the family challenging a court ruling barring her from applying for asylum. Yesterday, the High Court said it wasn’t a call for them to make, and now the family and their supporters are calling on Immigration Minister Alex Hawke to use his ministerial discretion to allow them to stay.
