Mouse plague forces jail evacuation

The Wellington Correctional Facility near Dubbo in NSW started to evacuate yesterday thanks to the region’s mouse plague. It’s one of the state’s biggest jails, and mice have created problems since last year, but the situation has gone from bad to worse as rodent numbers increase. Think mice infiltrating living quarters and chewing through electrical wires, and then dying in the walls. So they’re out, and it’s no small endeavour… Over the next 10 days, 420 male and female prisoners and 200 staff will be relocated to other jails. The centre is expected to be out of action for at least 4 months while the mice are exterminated and repairs are undertaken – including mouse proofing to avoid future damage.
