Competition watchdog eyes digital sellers
The customer experience with Australia’s online marketplaces can be a bit hit and miss… We’ll spare you our tales of woe, but the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is digging deeper. And the brief is a big one… An investigation will probe the likes of Amazon, eBay, Kogan, and Catch’s market power, their data collection practices and its use, pricing, and their impact on competition. “Online sales have doubled in the last 2 years,” ACCC boss Rod Sims said yesterday. “We want to make sure we’re well ahead of those issues because once they get away from you, they’re very hard to pull back.” The regulator’s findings will be handed down in March next year.
