Fortescue farewells hundreds
Fortescue Metals Group – West Australian billionaire Andrew “Twiggy” Forrest’s mining company – is the latest to cut jobs… Last night, the company announced it was moving to “simplify its structure, remove duplication and deliver cost efficiencies” and dialled down its green energy goals. In a statement to investors, Fortescue – which employs about 16,000 staff – said the restructure would see “approximately 700 people” from across its global operations offered redundancies by the end of the month. It’s not yet clear how many of those are in Australia… In a separate statement, Forrest said Fortescue is committed to going green and that “without change, improvement is impossible”. But others say the company has hit a stumbling block, and that will have an impact on Australia’s emissions reduction efforts.
