As you might have noticed, we enjoy a good auction – and it doesn’t get much better than this… Since his death in 1991, rockstar Freddie Mercury’s London home has remained intact after leaving it to close friend Mary Austin. Mercury filled it with notable paintings, glasswork and Japanese art and fabrics. He called it “exquisite clutter”, but Austin says it’s “a very intelligent, sophisticated collection” that she is selling after making the difficult decision to “close this very special chapter in my life.” Beyond a few “personal gifts” and photos, everything – including Mercury’s flamboyant costumes, handwritten lyrics, and personal effects – is to be sold. The items will go on show in London, New York, Los Angeles and Hong Kong before being auctioned in September. And if John Travolta’s Saturday Night Fever suit can get US$260,000, imagine what Freddie’s crown and robe will fetch…
