Johansson to avenge box office loss

Last month’s simultaneous release of a couple of big Disney movies in cinemas and on its streaming platform sparked comments about getting content to consumers in these disrupted times. Not so thrilled about the strategy is Scarlett Johansson, the star of Black Widow. She says it’s done her out of box office bonuses calculated on what the flick earns in theatres. And to get what she says she’s due (on top of her US$20 million upfront salary), Johansson is suing Mickey Mouse’s mates. Since its release, Black Widow has taken about US$320 million worldwide – not a lot for a Marvel movie. But Johansson’s legal action could start something with Cruella star Emma Stone said to be considering a similar move after Disney gave her big film the same release treatment. For its part, Disney says it has fulfilled its end of the deal, and the lawsuit is “especially sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
