R Kelly gets his day(s) in court

After years of allegations, disgraced R&B singer R Kelly’s trial kicked off in New York yesterday. Laid bare in the documentary Surviving R Kelly, the man behind hits like Ignition and I Believe I Can Fly has been accused of sexually abusing several women and girls. His marriage to then-15yo singer Aaliyah (who died in a plane crash in 2001) has also been questioned. The 54yo has been in custody since his arrest in 2019 on child exploitation and kidnapping charges. The COVID-delayed trial is Kelly’s first since he was acquitted on child pornography charges in 2008. Six unnamed women who claim to be survivors will give evidence, and Kelly’s legal team says he will plead not guilty. The trial is expected to take a month.
