Three Minute Squiz with… Leigh Sales
20 September 2017
ABC TV’S 7.30 host, patron saint of The Squiz and all-round excellent person, Leigh Sales tackles the first Three Minute Squiz.
How and where do you Squiz?
In bed on my iPhone when I wake up.
What was the first album you ever owned?
Summer Breaks ’83.
What’s your go-to karaoke song?
I hate karaoke.
What’s your guilty TV-watching secret?
Name four people – living or dead – you’d kill to sit down to dinner with.
My nana, Mark Colvin, David Bowie and Grace Coddington.
Your favourite writer?
What skill or talent do you not have but wish you did?
To play the cello.
Which historical figure do you most identify with?
Given that currently I am one of the leaders of a cult, Chat 10 Looks 3, the answer is alarmingly probably Joseph Smith.
What do you consider the most overrated virtue?
Which words or phrases do you most overuse?
“It’s not really my bag.”
What’s your best habit?
I never waste time.
You are a baker of renown among your friends. If you could only eat one baked good for the rest of your life, what would it be?
A custard tart, one of those old-fashioned bakery ones with nutmeg on top.
What’s your no-fail dinner party recipe?
Bill Granger has a Moroccan fish curry in one of his cookbooks and it’s very easy but always impresses.
Where were you born?
What qualities do you most value in a friend?
Kindness and wit.
What would you say is the most currently overlooked news story we should know about?
How heavily the federal government subsidises the private health insurance industry versus how little value for money it gives in return.
We’re big fans of your very excellent podcast, Chat 10, Looks 3, which you’re taking on the road in a series of stage shows. Will you indulge your (not so) hidden talent and tinkle the ivories at some point? And if so, what song might we hear?
Why would I take it live if not for the chance to sing on stage? Crabb and I are working on an old standard but I don’t want to spoil the surprise.
