Before you reach for a vino/spritz/brew to mark the end of the week, here’s some food (or booze…) for thought… About 21% of Aussie women between 45-60yo drink at ‘binge’ levels, which is 5 or more drinks on one occasion. That’s up from 13% in 2001. The same group is also doing more long-term risky drinking, defined as putting away more than 2 drinks a day. The researchers of the paper published yesterday said the drinking habits of young people and men are usually in focus, but it’s women who have “a higher susceptibility to alcohol-related health consequences”. That includes things like heart disease, immune and infectious diseases and cancer. And the kicker: women don’t need to drink as much or for as long as men to reach the high risk category. If you’re considering a booze embargo, experts say to focus on short term benefits, like enjoying better sleep.
