Meanwhile, in coronavirus news – 23 June 2021

• Mandatory indoor mask requirements have been extended across Greater Sydney for at least a week with the Bondi cluster growing to 21 after 10 new COVID cases were recorded yesterday. All cases had links to others except for one – the infection of a schoolboy remains a mystery. Authorities asked Sydneysiders to check the list of exposure sites and check in to indoor venues via the QR code.

• As for how that affects travel interstate… With 4 hours notice, Victoria last night banned non-residents who have visited any of the 7 ‘red zones’ in Sydney from entering the state. Residents can return home, but they need to quarantine at home for 2 weeks. And New Zealand last night cut NSW out of the travel bubble for at least 3 days.

• Heading further afield, President Rodrigo Duterte, the Philippines’ strongman leader, is battling low vaccination rates as cases pass the million mark. So he’s working up a new ‘incentive’ to get the jab: “You choose, vaccine or I will have you jailed,” he said in a televised address yesterday.
