Medical panel cracks down on prominent brain surgeon

Restrictions have been placed on Dr Charlie Teo after complaints were made about his work. The origin and substance of the complaints have not been made public. Yesterday, the Medical Council of NSW decided Teo will not be allowed to perform certain operations without approval from another neurosurgeon, and his records will be randomly audited. Teo has long been a controversial figure in medicine for his ‘last chance’ brain surgeries when other specialists have told patients they are at the end of the road. He has also been accused by colleagues of charging vulnerable patients exorbitant fees for his services – something he has strongly denied – along with a bunch of claims about his professional conduct. Teo says the need for greater consultation won’t impact his procedures, but as arguably Australia’s highest profile doctor, it’s been reported as a “fall from grace”.
