Tech pioneer John McAfee dead

US fugitive and anti-virus software pioneer John McAfee was found dead in his jail cell in Spain yesterday. An investigation is underway, but authorities say they believe he took his own life. He was found just hours after a Spanish court approved the 75yo’s extradition to the US over tax evasion and money laundering charges that could have seen him spend the rest of his life behind bars. McAfee had claimed the charges were politically motivated after running for the US presidency as a candidate for the Libertarian Party in 2016 and 2020. While his main claim to fame was founding his eponymous software company and creating the world’s first all-in-one virus scanner, McAfee’s tumultuous personal life often overshadowed his tech prowess. For example, there are claims that he had fathered 47 children and rumours he was involved in the murder of a neighbour. McAfee had been in detention in Spain since October last year.
