China sent 39 warplanes into Taiwan’s air defence identification zone (ADIZ) on Sunday in the next round of escalating tensions. The ADIZ isn’t Taiwan’s air space, but a broader area that it patrols, just like many countries do. Officials say Taiwanese fighters scrambled to warn the Chinese away from the contested zone in response to the largest incursion this year. There’s a bit going on in the area ATM… The US Navy has 3 aircraft carrier strike groups in the vicinity, and Marines who are in joint exercises with the Japanese. China claims Taiwan as its own territory, and its sent repeated missions to pressure the democratically-governed island. For Taiwan’s part, it’s labelled China’s repeated incursions as “grey zone” warfare. In the recent past, China has said the flights are drills aimed at protecting the country’s sovereignty.
