Duterte to go around again – from the passenger’s seat

The rivals of Filipino President Rodrigo Duterte are smelling something fishy after he revealed he will be running for the vice presidency in next year’s elections. In his weekly address to the nation, the strongman leader has pledged that he would “continue the crusade” against criminals and drugs as veep. During his term, he’s copped international flack for his anti-drug campaign, which many believe is tantamount to extrajudicial killings. In the Philippines, presidents get one term, and critics say Duterte’s move could see him sneak in a second term. One theory is that the ruling PDP–Laban party will endorse incumbent senator Christopher ‘Bong’ Go as its presidential candidate. He’d then resign after an election win, and Duterte could end up back in the top job. Duterte’s team says the rumours are “unfounded and illogical”.
