Gupta brothers arrested on corruption charges

Two brothers from one of South Africa’s wealthiest families have been arrested in the United Arab Emirates after they were charged over corrupt dealings with the country’s former President Jacob Zuma. Atul and Rajesh Gupta are accused of pocketing US$32 billion from their close ties with Zuma – who rose to power in 2009 but was forced to step down following explosive corruption allegations in 2018. Both Zuma and the Guptas deny the claims, but the brothers fled to the UAE after a commission started sniffing around in 2018. Last year, South Africa negotiated an extradition treaty with the Middle Eastern country with the aim of getting the Guptas back to face charges, and negotiations are ongoing
