Helping Afghans who helped America
The Biden administration will set up a new program to settle a particular group of Afghans as refugees in the United States, reports say. Which group? Those who worked for the US government, non-government bodies and news organisations during the long-running conflict but weren’t in the group of 8,000 who qualify for a Special Immigration Visa. Biden has faced pressure to help Afghans who fear they will be targeted by the Taliban for their association with the US during the almost 20-year war. Over the weekend, the Taliban closed in on several major cities across the country, with Afghan officials scrambling to secure nearby prisons holding thousands of militants. #SquizShortcut
