Making a bad situation worse in Haiti

There are now 1,419 deaths and more than 6,900 people who have been injured by the 7.2-magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti last weekend. Rescuers hurried to locate more survivors trapped under the rubble of fallen buildings before the Caribbean nation received another unwelcome visitor: Tropical Storm Grace. It has passed through bringing heavy rain – a dumping of up to 250mm was expected over the quake-affected western region. That’s a little less than half of Adelaide’s annual rainfall… While Haiti has started receiving international aid, ongoing political unrest is complicating efforts, charities say. And with humanitarian disasters unfolding in places like Afghanistan and Ethiopia, as well as the ongoing global pandemic, there are fears the situation in Haiti won’t get enough global attention.
