Malaysia has a new PM

The party that has dominated the nation’s politics since the 1950s has returned to power with Ismail Sabri Yaakob sworn in as PM on Saturday. It follows a turbulent 18 months after nonagenarian leader Mahathir Mohamad resigned after his coalition collapsed. And on Monday, his replacement Muhyiddin Yassin succumbed to the same people-management issues… With Ismail’s United Malays National Organization (UMNO) back in office, it means “Malaysia has a new PM, with essentially the old politics and players,” says expert Bridget Welsh. As for things to crack on with, Malaysia has one of the world’s highest COVID infection rates and deaths per capita, and there’s rising public anger about how it’s been handled.
