US troops targeted in Syria

US soldiers stationed in Syria came under rocket fire yesterday in what is believed to be in retaliation for US airstrikes against Iran-backed militia groups on the Syria-Iraq border earlier this week. No US troops were injured, a spokesman said. The US launched a series of airstrikes following an increasing number of drone attacks on its personnel in the region. While it’s yet to be confirmed who was responsible for the latest rocket attack, US experts say it highlights the ongoing risk of conflict with Iran. There are also concerns about the growing assertiveness of Iran-backed militias as coalition troops prepare to leave the region by mid-September.
