Xi and Biden check in

It went for 2 hours and 17 minutes… US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping had quite the talk overnight – their 5th since Biden took office last year. In focus after this exchange is Taiwan because Xi has designs on ‘unifying’ the democratic self-governing island with mainland China. Earlier this month, US defence officials said China is getting ready to attack, raising America’s concerns. As for China, it’s not much impressed that Taiwan could soon get a visit from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Xi’s team says he told Biden “if you play with fire, you get burned”. The White House’s account was less agro – it said Biden told Xi that he doesn’t want to see any moves that would undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. The men are expected to meet face-to-face at the big leaders’ summits in November.
