From Afghanistan to the Indo-Pacific
In his first public comments since America withdrew from Afghanistan under cover of darkness on Monday night, US President Joe Biden yesterday defended the decision. “The world is changing,” he said, and a “new era” of US diplomacy will bring an end to America’s nation-building overseas. Biden’s sights are now on the Pacific region, and particularly China. It’s something on PM Scott Morrison’s mind too, as the leaders marked the 70th anniversary of the signing of the ANZUS treaty – an agreement between Oz, Kiwiland and America to consult with one another when it comes to acting against security threats. Biden has recorded a little video on it saying the partnership is as “essential today as it has ever been … to support a free and open Indo-Pacific”. Morrison and Biden are expected to have a long chat in the coming days.
