Survey says…
…that 60% of Aussies see China as a security threat ahead of being an economic partner. According to the Lowy Institute’s 2021 poll of Australian attitudes to the world, our trust in China is at a record low. Hand in hand with that is a resurgence of faith in the US. The election of Joe Biden has Aussies feeling more chipper about America than we did when former president Donald Trump ran the joint. By contrast, 10% had confidence that China’s President Xi Jinping would “do the right thing regarding world affairs”. “In 2016, if you asked Australians whether our relationship with the US or China was more important, it was a dead heat… That’s certainly not the case today,” said Natasha Kassam from the Lowy Institute.
