Remains recovered in chopper search

Taipan helicopter

Unidentified human remains have been found during the search of the site where the Taipan helicopter crashed with 4 Aussie servicemen on board during a military training exercise in Queensland’s Whitsundays on Friday. Lieutenant General Greg Bilton said a remotely operated underwater vehicle had located a debris field that includes parts of the helicopter’s cockpit about 40m under the surface. He said it shows a “high impact” crash, and it’s “unlikely” the remains could be identified until more wreckage was found. There are still questions about how the crash occurred – the helicopter’s black box hasn’t been found yet, and Lieutenant General Bilton said all communications were “normal” before the aircraft went down. The military’s Taipan fleet (due to be retired at the end of next year) has been grounded while the investigation is underway.
