China cracks down on karaoke
In a blow to karaoke lovers across China, the country’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism will ban all karaoke songs containing “illegal content”. That includes songs with references to activities like gambling or drug use, so bad luck Kenny Rogers and The Weeknd… And sorry, Kanye – tunes that could endanger national security are also out. It won’t be an easy task for China’s nearly 50,000 karaoke venues, which now have to audit their music libraries of about 100,000 songs. As long as a perennial favourite stays because it ain’t karaoke if you can’t bang, bang, bang on the door, baby…
