AFL investigating online racism
Indigenous players have helped shape the AFL, but decades-long efforts to tackle racist abuse haven’t stamped it out. Yesterday, the AFL’s integrity unit launched investigations into separate instances directed at 4 Indigenous players following last weekend’s games. Fremantle players Michael Walters and Nathan Wilson, Brisbane’s Charlie Cameron and the Adelaide Crows’ Izak Rankine have copped it on social media this week, prompting players, coaches and the outgoing league boss Gill McLachlan to speak out. “This has to stop. There is no place in our game for anyone who vilifies our players,” McLachlan said yesterday. Racism has been a reoccurring issue in the league, with a report from the AFL Players Association last year finding nearly a 3rd of Indigenous/players of colour have faced racial abuse – including “concerning” racist incidents from people within the league.
