An update on the Miami apartment collapse
Rescue and recovery workers are still combing the site of the Champlain Towers South apartment building collapse in Surfside for more than 150 people who are missing. Nine people have been found dead, and while officials yesterday said they harbour hopes that some will be found alive, there are fears the toll will be higher. Questions about how it could have happened are being asked after it emerged that a 2018 engineers report referenced major structural damage beneath the pool deck and issues with the condition of the concrete in the underground parking garage. A lawyer for the building’s association said bids for the US$9 million repair job had been sought, but the pandemic slowed things down.
