Brittney Griner sent home by Russia

US basketballer Brittney Griner is on her way back to the States after being released by Russia in a prisoner exchange deal. She’s spent 10 months in detention after being arrested in a Moscow airport for possessing cannabis in February. Reports say the exchange was proposed by US President Joe Biden’s office, and overnight, she was swapped for Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout – ominously known as the ‘Merchant of Death’. It comes after President Vladimir Putin said the global threat of nuclear war is rising at Russia’s annual Human Rights Council meeting yesterday. He says that Russia has not “gone mad” and would not use nuclear weapons first, but he added “if you don’t use them first, that means you don’t use them second, either”. He also warned the Ukraine war would be “a long process”, contrasting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who says he’s looking forward to peace for his country next year…
