Messi’s on the money
Argentinian football great Lionel Messi has inked a 2-year contract with Paris St-Germain. It was a tearful soccer star who confirmed on Sunday that he would leave Barcelona, where he’d played since 2000 when he was talent-spotted as a 13yo. He’s not going because he’s looking for a change of scene – the debt-ridden Spanish club can’t afford him anymore despite his 50% pay cut. “I gave everything for this club from the first day that I arrived right to the last. I never imagined having to say goodbye,” he said. But last night, it was ‘bonjour’ and “I’m impatient to start a new chapter” in Paris. Under the deal, the 34yo is expected to receive €63 million (AU$101 million) a season – less than half the value of his last contract with Barcelona that made him the world’s 2nd highest-paid athlete. Messi will wear the #30 shirt for Paris St-Germain from this weekend, and you can get yours here…
