AFL decider heads west
Perth will host the 2021 AFL grand final after Melbourne was ruled out yesterday. The MCG is home to one of Aussie sports’ biggest days, but it will be the 2nd year in a row that it’s played elsewhere. That also makes it the 2nd time in 124 years that it won’t be held in Melbourne. Perth was put on notice last week that it was in line to host the 25 September premiership game as the COVID outbreak in Victoria grew. It was picked because under current public health settings, Optus Stadium can host a 60,000 capacity crowd. Western Oz Premier Mark McGowan said “very strict rules” will be in place – “but it’s very exciting”. To ease the blow, the AFL has extended Melbourne’s grand final hosting rights to 2059 when it’s hoped COVID restrictions will have ended. Carn the Giants…
