Red hot political nerd alert… It’s ALP National Conference time, and this one in Brissy is promising some policy action. The party faithful haven’t met in person since 2018 because of COVID, so this gathering of more than 2,000 people is a big deal. You can expect to hear about Labor’s priorities on the cost of living crisis, education and the environment – but remember the conference is always one to watch because delegates can put up motions opposing the decisions of their PM or ministers… Some of the biggies currently stirring controversy: AUKUS and our nuclear subs deal with the US along with stage 3 tax cuts and dealing with the housing crisis. On that front… National Cabinet has backed a deal to build 1.2 million homes (up from 1 million) over 5 years and has rejected a Greens’ plea for a freeze on rents.
