A joint ticket on released detainees

MANUS, LORENGAU, PAPUA NEW GUINEA - 2018/02/07: Kurdish Karam Zahirian left everything when he fled Iran. He was hoping to find sanctuary in Australia. But in stead he was sent to Australia offshore detention center at Manus island.

The human cost of Australias offshore detention policy has been high for those unfortunate enough to have been caught in its net. For asylum seekers trapped on the remote island of Manus in Papua New Guinea, the future remains as uncertain as ever. Australias offshore detention center there was destroyed in 31 October 2017 but for the 600 or so migrants who remain on the remote Pacific island, little has changed. The asylum seekers live with the torment of separation from family and friends and in the shadow of depression and the traumas of their past. (Photo by Jonas Gratzer/LightRocket via Getty Images)

On Monday, we told you about the release of a group of people from immigration detention following a landmark High Court ruling a week ago. The court ruled that non-citizens can’t be indefinitely detained if they’re unable to be deported, and yesterday, Immigration Minister Andrew Giles confirmed that 81 detainees had been released. Among them, 3 murderers and several sex offenders… Giles says they must check in with authorities daily. Under pressure from the Coalition in Question Time yesterday, Giles said the Albanese Government argued against the detainees’ release in court, and said there’s a “shared rejection and revulsion” at the men’s criminal conduct. He also said he’s looking into legislative and regulatory options in response to the ruling.
