Livin’ La Niña loca
After weeks of speculation, the Bureau of Meteorology has made it official – La Niña is back for spring-summer and, like, why is she so obsessed with us? It’s the wet/cool climate driver’s 3rd consecutive visit, and we haven’t always been so dismissive. It was welcomed in 2020-21 after the devastating 2017-19 droughts that brought farmers and rural communities to their knees across Queensland, NSW and Victoria, and parts of South and Western Oz. But a double-up in 2021-22 brought extreme flooding, particularly in Northern NSW and Queensland, from the start of this year. So you can understand the concern about what a 3rd go around might look like, given the ground is already saturated and rivers/water catchments are full. Heavy rain isn’t guaranteed, and the last time we had a triple-header – between 1998-2001 – the 3rd was the weakest. The experts don’t know how wet it will get, but they agree on one thing – if you’re in an area that might flood, prepare a plan. #SquizShortcuts
