More lockdown for NT and the ACT

• NSW reported another record day of new local COVID cases with 478 infections and 7 deaths. Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the numbers are “disturbingly high” and said too many people continue to defy public health orders leading to “tragic consequences”.

• Lockdowns have been extended for 2 more weeks in the ACT (which recorded 19 new local cases) and Melbourne (22 cases). Strict new rules are now in place in Victoria’s capital – Premier Daniel Andrews says a nighttime curfew is necessary because the city is “at a tipping point”. ANU infectious diseases expert Peter Collignon said he had “never seen any evidence that curfews make a lot of difference”.

• And the Northern Territory’s Greater Darwin and the Katherine regions have gone into a snap 3-day lockdown after confirming one new case. The man recently arrived from overseas and returned negative tests during his 14-day quarantine in Sydney before flying to Darwin via Canberra airport.
