Jobs summit fallout

Getting a lot of attention from last week’s Jobs and Skills Summit is support for widening access to multi-employer bargaining. That would mean that a union can negotiate deals for workers that cover more than one employer. That’s different to the current system of enterprise bargaining, where an agreement with each employer is struck. The unions are calling for it, and business groups agreed to consider it, but it’s an issue for their members. Over the weekend, many big employers said it would be harder to get a mutually beneficial deal with their staff. And yesterday, Coalition employment spokeswoman Michaelia Cash said they would “fight this every step of the way”. That won’t stop Workplace Relations Minister Tony Burke from making a start on the legislation this week. Which is a long way of saying get ready for another shouty industrial relations debate when parliament resumes today…
