The NSW gaming regulator says the Star Entertainment Group is unfit to hold a licence for its Sydney casino. The damning report was released yesterday following an inquiry that has probed allegations of money laundering, criminal infiltration and corporate coverups at the venue. Yesterday, NSW’s Independent Casino Commission chief Philip Crawford said The Star “tended to ignore” the risks associated with their poor conduct and “tried to hide” the outcomes – even after the inquiry began. Noting that boss Matt Bekier and chairman John O’Neill have resigned, the company has 2 weeks to respond. After that, it could be stripped of its casino licence or have another penalty applied. “They need to demonstrate, to understand what their problems are and show leadership in fixing those problems … At the moment, we are not getting that vibe,” Crawford said. The licences for Star’s Brissie and Goldie casinos are also under review.
