Running a pharmacy is a complex enterprise – it’s one of the most regulated retail operations to wrangle. But gone are the days of the scene being dominated by small community setups – Chemist Warehouse is one of the mega pharmacy franchises with more than 500 stores across Oz. And yesterday, Sigma Healthcare – another Aussie pharmacy chain that supplies Amcal and Guardian outlets – announced its proposal to buy Chemist Warehouse Group in a deal that’s said to be worth $8.8 billion. The new company would be listed on the Australian Stock Exchange, but it first has to get past the Australian Consumer and Competition Commission.
