Whether you’re a chatty Cathy or prefer to avert your eyes when a neighbour comes into view, listen up… A new Gallup survey has found that adults who regularly have quick chats with their fellow community members report higher overall wellbeing. If you want the numbers to back that up, this story breaks them down… But the gist is that wellbeing rose from 51.5 (out of a ‘perfect score’ of 100) for people who don’t speak to their neighbours to more than 64 for those who say g’day. If you’re wondering what you’d say to multiple neighbours each day, don’t fret – a passing smile/hello is enough to boost your connection with people you see often. As for the number of neighbours, you should say g’day to, Gallup’s research director Dan Witters reckons 6 is “the sweet spot”. “After 6, there aren’t any greater benefits from greeting your neighbours beyond that,” he said.
