A tale as old as brine

Millennials had their avocado obsession, and now Gen Z is getting on board with a divisive and ages-old foodstuff: pickles. Those of a certain vintage would know that fandom of the sweet/savoury/tangy fare is nothing new, but the briny snack has seen an influx of interest from younger foodies as people take a leaf out of their grandparents’ book after pickling their way through the pandemic. TikTok has also played a role in the renewed obsession – the #pickle and #pickles hashtags have a combined 9.6 billion views on the popular video-sharing app, helped along by recent trends including ‘girl dinner’ and the hot pickle challenge. Picklemakers say sales have never been better, and US business review platform Yelp reported searches for pickle products have jumped by 55% over the last year. You can now get pickle pizzas, potato chips, and even alcoholic beverages – but think twice before incorporating it into your skincare routine
