A big weekend of sport ahead

• If you’ve been mourning the end of the Beijing Winter Olympics, it’ll be welcome news that the Paralympics open tonight. Oz has a 10-strong team of athletes competing. And in light of the war in Ukraine, Russian and Belarusian athletes have been banned from the Games amid fears that other nations could pull out and a tense atmosphere at the athletes village. Russia is challenging the decision…

• The women’s cricket one-day World Cup bats off in New Zealand today, and the #1 ranked Aussie team are the favourites to win. Sure, we might have lost the warm-up match against the Kiwis. And all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner has tested positive for COVID. But c’mon Aussie… Our first match against is against England tomorrow.

• And on the other side of the world, our Aussie men’s team is looking to retain their #1 world ranking in the first Test match against Pakistan that starts today. It’s our first tour of Pakistan in 24 years, the first Test tour in 2 years (thanks COVID…), and it’s the first Test match since the dramatic departure of coach Justin Langer. So there are a few unknowns
