Carlos Alcaraz, the 20yo, beat reigning champ Novak Djokovic in a five-set thriller to win his first Grand Slam trophy, 1-6, 7-6 (6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. Alcaraz becomes the first player not named Federer, Nadal, Murray, or Djokovic to win on the grass since 2002. “A dream come true for me,” Alcaraz said post-match. And it was an emotional win for Marketa Vondrousova, with the Czech becoming the first unseeded player to win the women’s Wimbledon title. She beat Ons Jabeur 6-4 6-4 in a victory she called “crazy”. “When we came, I was just like, ‘Try to win a couple of matches.’ Now this happened.” And Australia’s women’s Ashes team are grinners today, having clinched the series with their one-day international win overnight. England were chasing down 282 runs and narrowly missed it, coming just short at 279. Go Aussies!
