Tennis champ Novak Djokovic will be allowed back into the country for the Oz Open next year after Immigration Minister Andrew Giles overturned the 3-year visa ban he copped after he was deported. The Serbian’s visa was kicked out of the country in January because he didn’t qualify for an exemption to the requirement for visitors to be vaccinated. That led to a lot of back and forth between the federal government and Djokovic’s lawyers while the tennis star sat it out in immigration detention in Melbourne. As visitors are no longer required to be vaccinated, Djokovic’s lawyers were able to successfully campaign for his re-entry in 2023. It’s now up to the world #8 player to reapply, but Australian Open Director Craig Tiley says the 21-time Grand Slam champion “loves Australia” and wants to “get back to competing”.
