World Cup knockout time

Look, we know this tournament is mainly about the Matildas… But given we’re now down to the last 16 in the Women’s World Cup, we should probably check on the rest of the field with the Group rounds wrapping up last night. The #2 ranked Germany was bundled out last night, which is a shock. Until then, Jamaica sending home Brazil was the upset of the tournament – especially given the incredible backstory of the Reggae Girlz. Japan, England and Sweden won all 3 of their matches – and Panama gets a big shout-out for the best goal so far. The #1 ranked side USA only got through by a whisker. Our women play Denmark on Monday night, and there are hopeful signs Our Sam will get off the bench. On your to-do list this weekend: send all good vibes to her calf, please… The first knockout games – Switzerland v Spain and Japan v Norway kick off in Kiwiland tomorrow.

And while we have you, there’s another World Cup to note… South Africa’s hosting netball’s premier event, and the Diamonds’ hopes of winning the title took a hit overnight with a rare loss to England. We’ll take on the Kiwis in the semi-final tomorrow (note: the final is early Monday morning).
