A burning problem

Dangerous fires in Greece breached the capital Athens on the weekend forcing thousands to evacuate during a 45C heatwave. Also affected are areas in Crete and the Peloponnese including Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games. But the biggest fires are on Evia, the nation’s second-largest island, where more than 2,000 people were evacuated via ferry in terrifying scenes. Reports say the conditions eased a little early yesterday, but there are concerns that dangerous conditions are set to return. Turkey and the US are also fighting dangerous blazes that have threatened homes and forced large evacuations. Which sets the scene for a big new report on climate change… The United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is set to drop its take on the changes coming in the face of global warming.
