For the first time ever, a gun manufacturer has been held liable for a mass shooting in the US. Gunmaker Remington and its insurers have agreed to pay US$73 million (A$102 million) in compensation to the families of victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut in 2012 when 20 students aged 6-7yo and 6 adults were killed by Adam Lanza, who was using a Remington rifle. It’s been a long haul for victims’ families in their efforts to hold the company responsible. They launched the legal action in 2014 despite laws protecting firearms manufacturers and dealers from most civil lawsuits. But prosecutors successfully argued that Remington’s marketing to young men contributed to the massacre. The families’ attorney Josh Koskoff said the settlement should be “a wake-up call” for gun manufacturers and insurance companies.
