A nightmare in Miami

One person has died, 10 people are injured, and at least 51 people are unaccounted for after the collapse of an apartment building in Surfside, just north of Miami Beach in Florida, at 1.30am local time. A rescue mission has been mounted and at least 35 people have been pulled from the rubble, but officials don’t know who was there at the time. A cause is not immediately clear, authorities say. The Champlain Towers complex was built in 1980 and comprised 130 units. “The back of the building, probably a third or more, is totally pancaked,” Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett said. “Our hearts go out to the families of those who lost their beloved as a result of this horrific incident – and to those families who wait in anguish as search-and-rescue teams assess the situation,” a statement from the White House said. Pictures of the scene are here.
