Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has worsened food insecurity in poorer nations due to rising prices, and it’s a situation that could last for years. That’s the assessment of United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who says Ukraine was one of the world’s breadbaskets before the war. These days, its maise and wheat exports have been smashed, along with its vast cooking oil industry. That’s caused the prices of alternatives to soar, sending global food prices almost 30% higher than at the same time last year. Combined with the pandemic and effects of climate change, Guterres says it “threatens to tip tens of millions of people over the edge into food insecurity followed by malnutrition, mass hunger and famine.” The fix is “goodwill on all sides” to restore peace and prosperity to Ukraine, he says.
